Neal shot this video for the Travel Channel Academy. We’ve wanted to do the Big Trip for a long time, but his experience at TCA inspired us to go for it now.

You do know that you are about to do what a lot of people wish to do their whole life.
I would love to quit the job, get the RV and travel all over America. Looking forward to your experiences.

Very cool to see an alternate (extended) view of the original video. So this is where the raw oyster mania began? Good that it was captured for posterity.
Comment by Dave Petersen on 8 March 2008:
How often do you get commenters with almost the same name commenting on you blog. Is this weird or what!?!
Comment by Cali Lewis on 8 March 2008:
Whoa! That’s a little freaky! Well, welcome to The Big Trip, other Dave. ;)
Comment by Jay Wiegmann on 9 March 2008:
I can certainly see the style difference between GBtv and this one which is very Travel Channel-y. That and the audio difference from my GBtv feed set this apart as somehow even BETTER than GBtv. Do I have to shred my GIA credentials now? I hope not.
I’ve been watching since brief 40 or so, and as much as I envied the escape from the day job, I envy the two of you even more now (in a “wishing you the best - after all you’re taking us along for the ride too” sort of way).
Great work all around!
Comment by Dave Peterson on 9 March 2008:
@Jay - It just means Cali and Neal keep getting better, all the time. Kind of amazingly cool to be able to watch.
Comment by Neal on 9 March 2008:
@Dave Peterson (the first). This is exactly where the raw oyster mania began. For tech podcasters, we produce an inordinate amount of oyster-related content.
I’m currently uploading a new video of Cali learning to shuck oysters to Cali’s Junk Trunk (junktrunk.podshow.com). Cali edited it, and did an amazing job, but my camera settings were way off and there is too much blur. Still, if you can’t get enough oyster content, we’re here to serve!
Here is the video: http://media.podshow.com/media/14309/episodes/103147/junktrunk-103147-03-09-2008.mp4
Comment by Dave Peterson on 9 March 2008:
@Neal - Just waiting for the “All Oysters - All the Time” feed. You can manage one more show, right?
Comment by Jeff D. on 10 March 2008:
First, I love the new show & I’m looking forward to seeing your trip. However, I can’t play the video from the site on my iPhone. Do you have another compatible feed? Thanks!
P.S. I hope Sydney is doing better.

Hey - I’m glad you put this one up, I’ve been trying to find it to put on blog for English learners. Keep ‘em coming…
Comment by Keith Higdon on 11 March 2008:
My family goes camping all summer will you tell us ahead of time so we could meet you?
Comment by Jim on 11 March 2008:
Cali,
I’m really looking forward to your trip and stories - If you come across Blue Crabs again here is a video link on what to do - http://www.old-bay.com/recipes_how_to_videos.php?show=1. I live in Maryland for a couple of years and loved crab season. By the way I think the red stuff is another Maryland staple “old-bay seasoning”. Enjoyed the video - Thanks, Jim
Comment by Neal on 11 March 2008:
@Jeff D. - We should have feeds up sometime this weekend. We’ll have an HD video feed and a feed for portables.

Once you make your way to Anchorage, AK, our family would like to offer you guys a pit stop for a real alaskan meal. My wife is an excellent gourmet cook, and we would all like to say hi. Plus, we’ve traveled all around this state and can be of some help if you need it. Looking forward to reading about your journey’s.

Saw your clip!! your pretty brave to eat the raw oysters. We are from DC area and go to the Wharf. We got some great shrimp and great deviled crabs but you have to watch the fish!! We have had some bad fish there before looks ok , get it home smells like 1000 trash cans. If your on your road trip and hit another fish market… dont forget!! if it smells like fish, its bad!! should smell like a fresh salty breeze and thats it!!!! fish NO SLIME!! you should see their eyes not cloudy!!!! and the red stuff on your oysters is “old bay” seafood seasoning!! A must!! loved your clip!!!!!
ps.. the crab pull the back tab on the bottom of crap up, pull apart top of shell from bottom, get all the ICK out and crab on both sides you can eat!!
great first time!!!
Comment by Mike Love on 9 November 2008:
I live in Arlington and work at the airport about 500 yards away across the Potomac River, so I know the wharf as well as Whitney who is only one of a number of “characters” there who act as barkers or I guess fishmongers is the more appropriate title. I actually see a lot of seafood being flown into DCA to keep up with the demand for oysters and crabs since the Bay and Tidewater regions are limited in their harvests each season for sustainability. I hope you get a chance to go to next years BIG Oyster Fest in Urbanna VA… it ended yesterday for 2008 (Nov 7 & 8th) I know my friends down there had a blast, and are bringing me some fresh ones for my B’day Nov 27th to go with my Turkey.
